This is a civilian position responsible for performing non-emergency, public contact functions within the Police Department. This position is designed to develop High School or College students between the ages of 18 to 25 years old for a career in law enforcement, while learning the overall functions of the Police Department. The Cadet will have a direct supervisor out of the NPO Office who will set their schedule, but also act as a law enforcement mentor. In this role, the NPO will help them make wise choices during a phase in life where many lose their way and become involved in behavior that prevents them from having a career in law enforcement.


Must be 18 to 25 years of age. Valid driver's license with a safe driving record. Must be able to obtain TCIC/NCIC access. Must have no prior convictions of any felony or misdemeanor of Grade A or B and be able to pass a polygraph examination. Ability to understand and follow oral/written instructions, coordinate multiple assignments and tasks, and communicate effectively with city personnel/general public, especially in emotional/high stress situations. Strong attention to detail needed. Ability to work independently with little supervision. Ability to testify in legal proceedings. Must be able to work shifts including: days, evenings, weekends and holidays as needed. High School students will be limited to 10 hours per week working no later than 8pm; College students will be limited to working 20 hours per week with no time restrictions as long as it doesn't interfere with classes.


Successfully complete training within each division at the Police Department. Takes reports for various Police Department Divisions and enters them in to the Crimes Reporting System. Assists citizens in the lobby and answers general questions regarding city ordinances and state laws. Assist patrol, Criminal Investigative Division, Jail Operations, Dispatch, and Community Services Division with various duties as needed. Assumes custody of evidence brought to Police Department by complainants and follows necessary storage procedures. Performs all other related duties as assigned.


Ability to stand for extended periods of time in varying types of weather conditions. Sitting; repetitive movement of wrist and fingers during computer data input; reaching, thus the work space needs to be considered. Maintains static posture during sitting.
